Pro Tip from Plant & Pursue: Expert education is the key to habitat success. The number one reason switchgrass plantings fail is poor weed control! Because switchgrass spends its first year establishing a massive root system, it grows slowly above ground and can easily be choked out by broadleaf weeds and foxtail. We highly recommend applying a pre-emergent herbicide (like Simazine) right after planting. Also, frost seeding is the absolute best way to plant switchgrass. Broadcast the seed onto bare dirt in late winter (February/March); the freezing and thawing of the ground will naturally pull the tiny seeds to the perfect ~1/8 inch depth!

When planting warm-season native grasses for bedding cover, always remember that bigger is better when it comes to plot size. Deer are much more likely to bed in bigger plots of these grasses than smaller ones. On our properties, we never plant plots of these grasses smaller than 5 acres.
